Fireside Lodge Fishing News Report 5/24 to 5/31 2008

Hello from Fireside Lodge in beautiful Northwest Ontario, Canada. After a cold start on our first week the weather broke for a few days giving us some sunshine, but the snow came back for one more day. After we got through that event it did turn sunny and cool again, with temperatures 55 to 62 degrees.

Tony Majcher from Hawthorne Woods, IL returned to Fireside Lodge for his sixth trip. Tony got off to a quick start on his day of arrival by catching a 37.5 inch Muskie while catching some Smallmouth Bass. First day of fishing had Tony catching more Smallmouth Bass and landing an 18-inch Master Anglers Award Smallie. Next day Tony caught eleven Smallmouth Bass including another Master Anglers Award 18.5 inch Smallmouth. At supper Tony said he felt the Smallmouth were starting to move up, and the following day proved him to be correct as he caught 21 Smallmouth on the reefs. Last day, believe it or not, it snowed all morning with temperatures not getting above 46 degrees. Tony just enjoyed the comforts of the lodge most of he day, and had some good conversations wit Audrey??s parents Beverly and Steve. Tony did make a last outing for a few hours, and despite the severe cold front, Tony caught some Smallmouth, including a 17.5 incher, and a bonus of two nice size Lake Trout measuring 26 and 28 inches. Tony expressed before leaving and in an email after returning home, that he had his best fishing experience ever, and definitely plans on returning to Fireside Lodge.

Bill Stayer from New Freedom, PA was fishing at Fireside Lodge for his fourth time in five years. Bill had a fabulous stay as he takes in the whole Canadian Wilderness Experience along with the wonderful fishing we have to offer. Bill during his stay caught 138 total fish, and the breakdown went something like this, 107 Northern Pike, 29 Smallmouth Bass, and 2 incidental Lake Trout. He caught a lot of bigger fish including his two largest Northern Pike, both measuring a robust 38 inches, and his largest Smallmouth Bass ever, landing a 18.5 inch Master Anglers Award Smallie, and his largest Lake Trout being around 32 inches. Bill went home refreshed and full of added memories and fish stories to share.

Larry and Scott Siebenthal from Creve Coeur, IL were back fishing at Fireside Lodge for their seventh consecutive year, and joining them this time was Larry??s wife Diane, and Candace Stanley. Larry and Scott coming all those previous years, and story telling of all their experiences made Diane and Candace want to see the Great Canadian Wilderness and become part of the exciting memories made at Fireside Lodge. They all had a fabulous trip catching lots of fish, seeing wildlife, birds, waterfowl, and the gorgeous Canadian sunsets, of which no two are alike. Diane, enjoying photography, had many subjects to take photos of, and took advantage of every moment to capture all she could. They had just about every type of weather imaginable, including snow for half a day with temps in the 40??s, sunny and calm, windy, and a Nor-Easter cold rainstorm that dumped 1.5 inches of hard and sometimes spitting rain all day long. Despite the variables and inconsistent weather patterns they did great catching fish. As a group they caught 207 Northern Pike, 9 Muskie including one 34-inch Tiger Musky, 18 Smallmouth Bass, and 3 Lake Trout including a Giant Master Anglers Award Lake Trout measuring 34 inches. Many of the Northern Pike were over 30 inches, the largest catch being Candace??s, a HUGE 39 incher. The largest Muskie was a 41-inch, with a close second at 40.5 inches caught by Larry and Scott, and Diane caught her first Muskie ever, a nice 37-inch barred Musky. Diane also caught two 35.5 inch Northern Pike. All had a Terrific time and hope to return in 2009.

Returning for the third time were Bo and Kevin Ellison from Paducah, KY and Nixa, MO. Having some experience goes a long way as these two did great during their 4 days of fishing. Fist day they caught 23 Smallmouth, second day they did GREAT catching 47 Smallmouth Bass. Third day had them catching 48 Smallmouth Bass, and 2 Northern Pike with Kevin catching a fat 34 incher. Their fourth and final day they finished with 36 Smallmouth Bass. That means they had an average of catching 38.5 Smallmouth per day. Fabulous Smallmouth Fishing in anyone??s fishing log. Bo and Kevin left with smiles and assurance they will return to Fireside Lodge.

Fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time were father and son Stephen and Steve Polep from Oakwood Hills, IL and Crystal Lake, IL. Being first timers it did not take long for then to catch on, and catch fish. The first full day Steve started off with his first catch being a 37.5 inch Muskie. WOW!!!!! What an act to follow. That first day they also caught 14 Smallmouth and one HUGE FAT Lake Trout measuring 28 inches.  Lake Trout in the spring cold waters get mixed into the rest of the fish population because the surface water temperatures are so cold. The next day Steve, while fishing for Smallmouth hook and landed a GIGANTIC 35 inch Master Anglers Award Lake Trout, and both continued to catch a mixed bag of 25 Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass. This father and son combo stayed consistent as they caught fish daily and had another 25+ Northern Pike day, and Stephen also landed a HUGE 31 inch Lake Trout.
Steve, ended his last day as he started his first, hooking a big  Muskie, but this time the Muskie won the battle. Both had tons of fun, great conversations in the main lodge area, and most important of all took home another set of father and son memories of fishing together in the Canadian Wilderness. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to make your special memories.
