Fireside Lodge Fishing News Report 9/6 to 9/13 2008

Hello from Fireside Lodge in Northwest Ontario. Beginning of the week started out with some much needed rain bringing in slightly cooler temperatures. After the rain event the weather was near perfect for three days being partly sunny with temperatures in the low to mid 60??s.

Aaron and Michele Hayes from North Aurora, IL were returning to Fireside Lodge for their second time in 2008, and in fact this is the third consecutive year they have come to Fireside lodge twice in the same year. Fishing for only two hours before supper on their day of arrival they caught 10 fish, mostly Northern Pike, and a Smallmouth Bass. GREAT START! First full day of fishing was full of fish, as they caught a mix of Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike. They caught 17 nice size Northern Pike, and as Michele was trying to catch Smallmouth with a #3 Blue Fox Spinner she hooked into and landed a MONSTER 39.5-inch Northern Pike. Definitely a fish worth seeing on our website. Second day they landed 23 fish with a mix of Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass, with a lot of 15-16 inch Smallmouth, and it was Aaron??s turn for the Big fish as he caught a 39-inch Northern Pike. Third day had them catching about 20 fish; mostly Northern Pike, and Aaron caught a 33-inch Muskie. This was despite the fact that they lost half their fishing time to a problem with the starter on their engine. Fourth day was GREAT as they caught 21 fish, mostly Northern Pike a few Smallies and Aaron caught the fish of his life and most peoples lifetime, as he landed a MONSTER Northern Pike measuring 45-inches. For 2008 this is the largest Master Anglers Award Northern Pike. The first few weeks in September are known for being BIG Fish TIME and this year is no exception. Fifth day these two decided to fish for Musky and Smallmouth Bass in Closs Lake. They did very well with Michele catching a 37and 33-inch Musky, 36-inch Northern Pike and Aaron caught two Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass measuring 18 and 19.5-inches, which made for another great big fish day. On their sixth and final day they had a fabulous day catching 26 fish with a lot of Northern Pike being 26 to 32-inches, and again caught BIG fish. Michele caught a 37-inch Northern Pike, and Aaron came up with two more Master Anglers Award fish one being an 18.5-inch Smallmouth Bass, and another Monster 41.5-inch Northern Pike. Michele and Aaron left having one of their best fishing trips ever.

Robert and Ruth Ann Porter from Wellington, KS were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time. First day fishing was very fun as Bob and Ruth Ann enjoyed the cool brisk day after a cold front moved in, and Ruth Ann caught a nice 30-inch Northern Pike as did Bob his measuring 28-inches. They also caught a couple of Smallmouth Bass. Second day was a beautiful fall day at Fireside Lodge, sunny and in the low to mid 60??s. Bob and Ruth Ann enjoyed catching some fish and also had a wonderful shore-lunch cooking over an open fire. It was so good they were full at suppertime and could not eat supper. After finding out, because of a hand injury, Bob??s preferred method of fishing was trolling we discussed some areas, which might be more accommodating for them to fish with this method. The next day they were off to try their new fishing spots and they were very successful catching many Northern Pike, some large fish in the mid 30-inch range, and a few Smallmouth, with Ruth Ann catching a Big Smallie. Great day!! Fourth day had them catching a lot of Northern Pike, over 20, and had a ball traveling through a creek, to one of our three creek accessible lakes, and getting over a Beaver Dam the in process. These are the days and events that make memories to last a lifetime. Their last day was spent catching a few fish, and just trying to soak up the natural beauty of the Boreal Forest Wilderness that surrounds Fireside Lodge and our lake system. This trip was a dream trip for Bob since he was a kid, and we are glad we at Fireside lodge were able to help in making Bob??s dream come true with Ruth Ann. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge.

Thomas and Wanda Jennette from Engelhard, NC were also fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time. The weather on their first day was very cold not getting above 50 degrees, and after a morning of that they decided to come in for lunch and enjoyed the rest of the day from the deck of their cabin. Thomas did have a big toothy critter take a lure from him, which he replaced at my tackle shop. Second day they caught more Smallmouth Bass and a few more Northern Pike. Third day they had fun catching 10 fish, 7 Northern Pike and three Smallmouth. Tom said things were going good until the wind picked up and by early afternoon there was a strong SW wind. Oh well, that??s fishing! The fourth and fifth days these two had a ball catching about a dozen Northern Pike each day and Tom enjoyed catching the size Pike we have, as they are very heavy and bigger than the average Northern Pike. In the dinning room I had Wanda in a hysterical laugher as I tried to imitate the southern saying ??I??m Slammed Out?, meaning I??m tired out. I guess I need to brush up on my Southern imitation. Their sixth and final day they did great catching 17 nice Northern Pike. Tom said every day they did better, which is the typical progression of fishing a new lake system. Both had a blast and hope to return in the near future.

Brad and Sherri Pugh from Pandora, Oh returned to Fireside Lodge for their sixth fishing trip. First day on the water and they had to fish post cold front conditions, and it was the first real cold front of the coming fall season. They did well catching seven nice fish, six Northern Pike in the 30-inch range and Brad caught a 33-inch Muskie. Second day they caught some nice Northern Pike and had a wonderful time on the sunny 60-degree day enjoying a fabulous shore lunch cooked over an open fire. Third day had them catching 10 fish total, and having a fabulously fun day on the water together. Fourth day they did great catching 17 Northern Pike. The fifth an final day they enjoyed catching fish and soaking up the wilderness and peacefulness that Fireside Lodge provides. Brad and Sherry had another wonderful trip filled with memories and good times, and Brad was already discussing their possible return in 2009.

Carlos and Guillermo (Bill) Leon and Oscar Villanueva all from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time. Living in a warm weather climate they were surprised at the temperatures not getting above 50 degrees on their first day. Well, the weather drove them in after just a few hours of fishing but they did get to see the lake and get familiar. No fish were caught, however they had a fabulous day enjoying the wonderful wilderness atmosphere we have at Fireside Lodge, and the terrific lake view from their cabin. The temperatures will be in the mid 60??s for their second day which will be more accommodating. Second day was much better weather wise and fishing as they got into Northern Pike landing some in the 30-35-inch range. This is all new, as they never fished in the far North, and never for Northern Pike. Third day they had a slower day catching only 2 fish, as a few other guests had a 20 and 30 fish day, so it was back to the drawing board on trying to educate them on location of fish and presentation of their lures. Fourth day they did GREAT catching well over 20 Northern Pike, and Bill caught a BIG 36-inch Northern Pike and a Big 17-inch Smallmouth Bass. Their smiles in the photos holding fish tell the whole story. At supper that evening Bill expressed how special this wilderness area is, and how privileged Audrey and I are to work and live in such a great atmosphere. These three were so thoughtful they brought Audrey and I each a gift from there home, and presented it to us in the Lodge on their last evening. All hope to return one day and hope we can come visit them during the winter.

Dave Anater from Lancaster, PA was returning to Fireside Lodge for his seventh time with good friend and first timer Richard Poillon from Pequea, PA. Well, Dave introduced his friend Rick to Little Vermillion Lake system in style as they had a fabulous day fishing, and catching as they landed over 40 Northern Pike up to 30-inches. Fast action and fun is always a great start on the first day of a fishing trip. Second day they were in search of larger fish and they found them, catching 12 nice size Pike with Rick concluding the day with his largest being a 34-incher. They also caught some good size Smallmouth Bass. Third day these two got into the toothy critters and Smallmouth catching over 30 fish, and Rick caught the Smallmouth of his life, and most people??s lifetime, as he landed an enormous 20-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass. They were both stunned when Dave netted Rick??s Smallie, as it completely filled the rubber landing net. A moment neither will forget. Their fourth and final day these two caught 24 Northern Pike and Rick came up with the BIG fish landing a 36-inch Northern Pike with the girth of a 40-inch plus Pike. Rick was impressed with his first trip to Fireside Lodge and hopes to return with Dave on future trips.
